Serious Sam 4

  • Release Date: 24 Sep, 2020
  • Developer: Croteam
  • Publisher: Devolver Digital

Serious Sam 4 was Croteam's flagship title while working for them, it was the latest sequel to their long running Serious Sam FPS game series.

My original task was, alongside my level designer partner from the Cancelled FPS Game Project team, was to create 6 PVP maps (possibly with multiple gamemode support), and 6 Survival maps; specifically instructed to remake 3 classic maps from previous games, and create 3 new maps based on areas from the game's main campaign levels.

Unfortunately, in the end the PVP mode was scrapped with all its levels, and Survival mode only launched with 3 maps, only 2 what I worked on. Due to hardware failure and lack of documentation, I don't have access to many material regards this project.

Desert Temple/Pompeii Temple

During the work on Serious Sam Fusion, when Serious Sam 4 was still very much a mod for Serious Sam 3, I have remade the classic Serious Sam 1 deathmatch multiplayer level, Desert Temple under the new engine, using the assets from The Talos Principle.

During the course of Serious Sam 4's development, I reworked the level using the Rome/Pompeii assets, renamed it to Pompeii Temple. Unfortunately, no screenshots survive from this later version of the level.

A regular Deathmatch and an expanded Capture the Flag gamemode version was created. The latter featured two temples, with a new underground tunner connecting the two and with the volcano erupting in the background.

Little Trouble

Little Trouble is another classic Serious Sam 1 level remade for Serious Sam 4, early in its development.

Further Plans

Plans made for the deathmatch levels based on Serious Sam 4 campaign levels. A few of them were in production, but never finished.

The third classic Deathmatch level remade was Brkeen Chevap, in the Rome tileset, but unfortunately don't have screenshots of it.

Survival Maps

These are the two Survival Maps that made it into the final game. "Backyard" was based on one of the campaign levels, while "Bear City" was a remade classic survival level from a previous Serious Sam game.

Four more Survival levels were made, 2 classic ones and 2 based on campaign ones, but for some reason they weren't included in the final game. Two of them did include cut flying enemies extensively, which might have been the reason why they weren't included in the full game.

Refinery Redo

Due to lack of time, one of the main levels of Serious Sam 4 had to be cut. Before leaving Croteam, I attempted to try to rework the most complete parts of the level in hopes of inclusion. In the end it still wasn't ready enough.

However, the level was finished in the stand-alone expansion, Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem! Though the finished version bore little resemblance to my version.
